Eller Life

A Day in the Life : Justin Hart, MBA '10

Justin HartThe past month has been an exciting time filled with new social and academic activities. We started with a two-week orientation that prepared us for the upcoming semester and gave us a chance to meet our new colleagues.

Since then, we’ve completed a case competition, discussed business best practices with Henry Corral from Intel as part of the Eller College Distinguished Speaker Series, and updated our resumes in pursuit of summer internships for next year.

In our precious free time, some of us have even had the opportunity to visit the Grand Canyon and enjoy live PAC-10 football action in the Arizona sun. It’s been a fast-paced, but extremely fun experience so far. The entire class is eager to continue this journey towards our MBA degrees.

Justin Hart is from Akron, Ohio and earned an undergraduate degree in marketing from Xavier University in Cincinnati. For the past five years, he has specialized in new business development and strategic marketing at GOJO Industries, Inc. (inventors of PURELL® Instant Hand Sanitizer). At Eller, he plans to continue to refine his marketing skills and pursue a career in marketing and brand management.

A Day in the Life : Stephanie Marcum, MBA '09

Stephanie MarcumAs I sit and reflect on my first-year experiences, I realize how beneficial the MBA program has been in preparing me for my career. There were times, I admit, I felt like I was just trying to hold on to the back of a train, trying not to fall off. But without such experiences, the year would not have made the same impression on me. Now that it is all said and done, it is fun to look back.

Of course my classes kept me busy over the last two semesters, but that certainly wasn’t the only thing to make my first year of the MBA so memorable. It was everything from how your business communications team becomes your family because you spent so much time together, to spending Thursday nights at happy hour with everyone in your class because classes were done for the week. (Class may have been finished, but we were far from being done.)

There were many other events throughout the year, too, like the international dinner where you could taste delicacies from all over the world, and an auction where professors raffle off a chance to take students to dinner or even to Mexico!

Certainly, I have only shared a fraction of everything we experienced in the first year but that’s because it only makes it that much more special when you actually experience it for yourself. Sometimes when I look back, I can hardly believe that I survived, but I did and I look forward to the second year.

Stephanie Marcum grew up in Pittsburgh and went to Ohio University where she received her undergraduate degree in Secondary Mathematics Education. Prior to coming to MBA school, she was a high school math teacher at Ironwood Ridge High School in Tucson, Arizona. Her concentrations are in marketing and management information systems and hopes to attain a job in business development.

Stories from the Field

2008 Summer Internships

Internship company logos: Dial, Emerson, IBM, Intel, and NikeThe members of the full-time Eller MBA class of 2009 had amazing experiences during their summer internships. The diversity of companies, disciplines, and locations of their experiences speaks to the strength of the Eller MBA program in preparing students to attain fulfilling careers upon graduation.

Nike, Dial, IBM, Emerson, and Intel were among the companies for which first year MBAs worked. From Mexico to Oregon to Texas to India, our students applied their learning in accounting, finance, management information systems, marketing, and entrepreneurship.

MBA student Susan Ebbert applied knowledge learned in her first year classes in IBM’s Extreme Blue Internship, a highly competitive program focused on new technology and innovation. Ebbert spent the summer in Austin, Texas and worked in a lab on a project with computer science engineers. She was responsible for the business side of her project, including business plan, marketing materials, and finance strategy.   Among the highlights: “At the end of the summer,” Ebbert said, “we presented our product to corporate executives in Armonk, New York.”

Nathan Boyless : MBA '08
Business Manager : Metcalf Archaeological Consultants

Nate BoylessAnthropology and business?  Not a typical intersection of interests, but that's the niche Nathan Boyless, MBA '08, was looking for when he considered his post-MBA plans. With an undergraduate degree in anthropology, Boyless was able to combine his passion for archaeology with his new-found business acumen.

Upon graduating from the Eller College of Management in 2008, Boyless accepted the business manager position at Metcalf Archaeological Consultants, Inc.  According to Boyless, Metcalf "has specialized in conducting cultural resource investigations in the northern and western Great Plains, northern Rocky Mountains, and Great Basin regions for almost 30 years."

Having relocated to Denver, Colorado for the position, Boyless expects to call upon all the techniques and training that he received during his MBA program at the University of Arizona. Says Boyless, "I am confident that my unique experience at Eller will enable me to help lead the company towards new opportunities, support and expand existing operations, and implement formal business processes."
